"Court Stenographer Inaccuracies in African American Vernacular English and Southern US English in Louisiana Court Systems"

Senior Research Project, LSU Discover Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program

This project explores textual accuracy of court stenographers when recording speakers of African American Vernacular English and Southern White English. Research methods and research question are modeled after the 2019 Language and Public Policy project titled "Testifying while black: An experimental study of court reporter accuracy in transcription of African American English". Adaptions were made to include a comparative analysis of inaccuracies made by stenographers in AAVE and Southern English. The project seeks to show lack of education and exposure during the licensing process of stenographers has a direct impact on accuracy of court documentation and legal proceedings when involving non-standard dialects, and should redefine what accuracy means for governing boards.
